Basic Cottage Pie

  • 250g Minced Beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 vegetable stock cube
  • 1 tbsp Corn flour
  • A handful of peas
  • 3 medium potatoes


  1. Peel and cut up potatoes into chunks and put on to boil in a saucepan.
  2. Peel and chop onion and fry in a pan
  3. Add the minced beef and cook until there is no more red in the meat colour
  4. Add some water and add the vegetable stock to the meat and simmer
  5. Add the peas to the meat
  6. Dissolve the corn flour in a little cold water and stir into the beef mixture (the liquid will thicken)
  7. Once the potatoes are cooked strain off the water.
  8. Mash the potatoes using a masher with a little butter and milk until light and fluffy
  9. Place the beef mixture in to a dish and place the mash potato on to the top
  10. Using a fork make ridges on the mashed potato
  11. Brown the top under a grill
  12. Serve

Replace the mince Beef with minced Lamb to make shepherds pie.
